AI & Academic Research

AI Guidance from CTL

If you're looking for guidance on managing AI in your instruction, the Center for Teaching and Learning's page on Artificial Intelligence Guidance is your primary resource for pedagogical strategies and policy guidance.

How Your Library Subject Librarians Can Help

The SHU library's subject librarians can help provide practical guidance to you and your students on AI and research, including:

  • The core limitations of trying to use general AI chatbots for academic research
  • An overview of the library's own AI-powered database tools
  • How to incorporate those library tools (when relevant) as part of a cohesive research strategy

If you are interested, please don't hesitate to reach out to your subject librarian via our Library Liaisons page on the library website.

AI Detection Tools

The previous version of this guide included a list of AI detection tools. We removed this list because growing research demonstrates significant problems with these tools and a detection-heavy approach:

  • High rates of false positives and false negatives
  • Bias against non-native English speakers and certain writing styles
  • Students facing false accusations when original work is incorrectly flagged

For alternative approaches to managing AI in instruction and coursework, please consult the Center for Teaching and Learning.
