Sacred Heart University’s teaching librarians provide customized instruction sessions in support of course-specific learning objectives and the development of robust information literacy skills. In collaboration with faculty, subject-specialist librarians teach students how to locate, evaluate, and use information sources effectively and ethically.
To ensure excellent learning outcomes for library instruction, faculty should follow the guidelines below when planning classes:
Instructors must be present at librarian instruction sessions. Your presence reinforces the importance of the information being taught and keeps the students engaged with the subject material. We also greatly appreciate the insight and questions that you may be able to provide during the session that can help your students’ potentially gain even more from the lesson.
Request library instruction sessions at least seven days in advance to ensure librarian availability and provide sufficient time for lesson planning.
Pair the instruction session with a specific research assignment. Library instruction proves more effective when students can apply their new skills to a project.
Provide a copy of the research assignment and/or a class syllabus to help your librarian craft a lesson tailored to your students’ specific research needs.
