Anti-Racism, Diversity and Inclusion: Building Your Context

For 21 days, do one action to further your understanding of power, privilege, supremacy, oppression, and equity. Plan includes suggestions for readings, podcasts, videos, observations, and ways to form and deepen community connections. Suggestions are in the following categories:

African American Periodicals, 1825-1995, features more than 170 wide-ranging periodicals by and about African Americans. Published in 26 states, the publications include academic and political journals, commercial magazines, institutional newsletters, organizations bulletins, annual reports and other genres. These diverse periodicals—which have shaped, and in turn been shaped by, African American culture—will enable new discoveries on lives of African Americans as individuals, as an ethnic group and as Americans.

Black Perspectives is the award-winning blog of the African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS). As engaged scholars, we are deeply committed to producing and disseminating cutting-edge research that is accessible to the public and is oriented towards advancing the lives of people of African descent and humanity. We serve as a medium to advance these critical goals.

In that spirit, I offer the “RACE” framework for educators and facilitators that I created for the HBS event. This framework is intended to prepare educators and facilitators to lead conversations about race in various learning environments, including academic classrooms and corporate environments. While I have taken the liberty of making some rather sweeping generalizations about people’s thoughts and feelings in developing this framework, I hope that what I share here will be a helpful resource for others.

The poems are grouped by the dates of the events they address, with each poem’s publication date in parentheses. We have included articles, audio and video resources, and links for additional resources related to this momentous period in American history.

These words are engraved in stone on the façade of the Central Library in Copley Square, and are central to the mission of the Boston Public Library. The BPL is a safe, inclusive, open, and accessible space dedicated to serving the cultural, educational, and informational needs of all Bostonians, residents of Massachusetts, and visitors. In keeping with this mission, this guide contains books and other resources relating to race and racism in America. Our hope is that students, educators, parents, activists, allies, library staff, and everyone in between may find this guide useful as they engage with and challenge issues of race, racism, police violence, privilege, social justice, and civil rights.

Historically, gun control has been used to control and criminalize people of color.

When Soviet propaganda started to make America seem racist during the Cold War, America went from a country that despised Asians to one that held them up as a shining example of assimilation to gain them as allies.

Redlining: the racist housing policy from the Jim Crow era that still affects us today.

Laura Morgan Roberts is professor of practice at the Darden School of Business and co-editor of "Race, Work, and Leadership," a book about what organizations to can do to eliminate systemic racism. She discusses how various companies are responding to racism today — and practical ways that leaders at all levels can step up for their colleagues of color.
