Updated Library Policies and Services

The Ryan Matura Library building will be open to the SHU Community only beginning August 31, 2020. While the building is open to current SHU students, faculty, and staff, many of our policies and services have been updated in order to serve you in the safest manner. Please note that you will not be allowed in the building without a reservation. Read more about our updated services below.

Library Spaces

Ryan Matura Library

The main Ryan Matura Library building will be open to current SHU students, faculty, and staff for the Fall semester. However, we have implemented the following policies to ensure everyone's safety.

  • Hours: The building will be open at reduced hours during the semester. Please check our Hours page for up-to-date hours.
  • Seats: In order to enter the building to study or print, you will need to Reserve a Seat. After making a reservation, you will receive a confirmation email with further instructions. Once you arrive at your seat, you will need to check in using a link in the email or the QR code at the seat. Please wipe down your seat area before and after use.
  • Printing: In order to print in the library, you will need to Reserve any Seat and then print from your laptop at that seat.
  • Scanners: The scanners and photocopier are available for use; however, you will need to reserve a time at the machines using our Reservation system.
  • Computer Workstations: The computer workstations are not available. You will be able to print from your laptop.
  • Groups: Groups and group studying will not be allowed in the Library. Everyone will need to maintain the 6-foot social distancing rules. The old group study rooms have been converted into reservable Individual Study Rooms with one seat.
  • Food: Consumption of food is not allowed in the library. Beverages in closed containers are permitted.
  • Furniture: Please do not move the furniture. All seats and furniture have been arranged and placed specifically to ensure social distancing.
  • Guests: Guests and visitors not affiliated with SHU are not allowed in the building at this time.

Collections

Digital Collection

The vast majority of the Library's collections are digital and will continue to be available through the Library website and our QuickSearch discovery tool. In addition, Faculty can use our Library Resource Builder to set up many of digital resources as course reserves in Blackboard

Requesting Books and DVDs

The Library stacks and bookshelves will be closed off during the Fall semester. In order to check out books and DVDs from the library, you will need to request the items through the catalog. Simply find an item that you would like to check out, click the "Place Hold" link, follow the instructions, and wait for an email indicating that your item is ready to be picked up at the designated table at the front of the Library. Please see the following video for more detailed instructions on requesting items for pickup.

Course Reserves

The Library will not have physical Course Reserves for the Fall semester. Faculty can still use our Library Resource Builder to set up many of our digital resources as course reserves in Blackboard.

Current Newspapers

Current newspapers or periodicals will not be available for on-site reading in the library. If you need an article from our physical journals, submit an ILL request, and we will scan it for you.
