Introduction

Welcome! This quick guide will cover:

  • What interlibrary loan is

  • How interlibrary loan works

  • How to submit an interlibrary loan request

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Need an item the library doesn't have? Don't worry! You can request it through our interlibrary loan service.

Interlibrary loan allows you to request articles and books not available in our collection. We obtain these materials from other libraries and deliver them to you at no cost.

Interlibrary Loan FAQs

1. What can I request through interlibrary loan?

You can request articles, books, and book chapters.

2. Do I need to create an account?

No sign-up needed! All students, faculty, and staff automatically have an inter-library loan account. Simply log in on the library website using your SHU username and password to start requesting materials.

Note: All requests must be submitted through your personal account. Library staff cannot submit requests on your behalf.

3. How do I submit a request?

The process is simple and explained in the guided practice activity at the bottom of this page. Generally, you'll:

  1. Log in to your interlibrary loan account
  2. Fill out a request form with article or book information
  3. Submit your request

See the guided practice below for step-by-step instructions.

4. Is there a limit on requests?

No, there is no limit on how many items you can request.

5. How long does it take?

Articles/book chapters: 2-3 business days (delivered electronically)

Physical books: 1-3 weeks (must be mailed from other libraries)

Note: Ebooks cannot be shared through interlibrary loan, so only physical books are available.

6. How will I know when my item arrives?

You'll receive an email notification at your Sacred Heart email address.

For articles: Access them electronically through your interlibrary loan account

For books: Pick them up at the library

7. How long can I keep materials?

Articles: Available in your account for 30 days with a limit of 5 downloads. Once you download and save an article, you can keep that copy indefinitely.

Books: Checkout periods vary by lending library. If you need more time, contact the Sacred Heart Library to request an extension.

8. What if my item doesn't arrive or I can't find it?

Contact the library's interlibrary loan staff at ill@sacredheart.edu. They can track your request and help troubleshoot any issues.
