First Year Seminar (FYS) Research Workshops Schedule, Fall 2016

These workshops are designed to assist you in conducting more effective research in your First Year Seminar courses and beyond. Come and learn some tricks for better university-level research and become familiar with databases and citation management tools that will set you up for success throughout your time at Sacred Heart University. To maximize your experience, bring a laptop or tablet computer. Also, feel free to ask questions about your own FYS research projects and get feedback from an information professional!


Session 1, The Research Process: Friday, October 28, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Location: BI Room on the Second Floor of the Ryan Matura Library (ask for directions at the reference or circulation desks on the first floor)

Overview: A broad overview of conducting university-level research, including identifying academic sources, choosing research topics, and thesis development.

Session 2, Database Searching: Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: BI Room on the Second Floor of the Ryan Matura Library (ask for directions at the reference or circulation desks on the first floor)

Overview: Introduction to a broad range of search strategies, such as subject searching, advanced keyword searching, and mining catalog entries for search terms.

Session 3, Citation Management: Monday, November 7, 2016 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM

Location: BI Room on the Second Floor of the Ryan Matura Library (ask for directions at the reference or circulation desks on the first floor)

Overview: Introduction to EasyBib. We'll walk through signing in, setting up folders and projects, importing citation data from library databases and the catalog, building an annotated bibliography, and exporting projects to MS Word and GoogleDocs.

Session 4, Focus on Academic Search Premier: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Location: BI Room on the Second Floor of the Ryan Matura Library (ask for directions at the reference or circulation desks on the first floor)

Overview: Session will focus solely on searching using Academic Search Premier and finding a variety of academic and non-academic source materials through this database.

Session 5, Focus on JSTOR: Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM

Location: BI Room on the Second Floor of the Ryan Matura Library (ask for directions at the reference or circulation desks on the first floor)

Overview: Session is an introduction to the unique search features of the JSTOR database. Focus is on assisting students in better locating academic publications in article and monograph form from JSTOR.
