DigitalCommons@SHU: Nuts & Bolts, Policies & Procedures

The place where you can find out all the stuff you wanted to know about SHU's Digital Commons site.

Digital Commons and Open Access

This page aims to provide information about the web applications Digital Commons and SelectedWorks, as well as the models that enables us to share our institutional scholarship through them; fair use and open access, including publishing.

Digital Commons is an online collection of work that is organized by College and Department to showcase Sacred Heart Universities scholarship and projects from faculty, staff and students.

Creative Commons provides the open licensing for copyright protection in different levels of openness depending on how much freedom the creator wants to give to those who use their materials.

Pure4EGS allows individual faculty members to develop professional profiles (connected to their institution through Digital Commons), which provides access to their work.

"Open Access is the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. Open Access ensures that anyone can access and use these results—to turn ideas into industries and breakthroughs into better lives" (SPARC).

Fair use is the means by which copyrighted materials can be used for educational purposed by following the specific guidelines of fair use that protect both users and creators, while still allowing certain amounts of information to be used for educational purposes.
