Lean Library: Your Library Where You Need It: Home

Introduction to Lean Library

What Is Lean Library?

Lean Library is a browser extension.  It gives you seamless access to SHU Library subscriptions to books, journals, and other information when you search Google, Google Scholar, Amazon, and other popular services, from anywhere in the world.

Less time searching, more time studying.  An easy option for broad access from your laptop or desktop.

How Can I Get Lean Library?

How can I get it?
  1. Open your favorite browser (Chrome*, Firefox, Safari**, Edge, or Opera).
  2. Go to and Lean Library will offer you the right extension. It's safe to download the extension.  Grant permission if the browser asks.
  3. Select "Sacred Heart University" from the drop-down list of libraries, and click Save. (You can leave the two checkboxes blank.)
  4. You will see a Welcome page, with a short video (1:29") and two short tutorials about how to use Lean Library.

* In the Chrome Store, this extension is called "Library Access" --just another Chrome name for Lean Library

**Safari requires Mac OS version 10.14 (Mojave) or later.

What about my privacy?

When you use the Library Library extension you will remain completely anonymous. The Library Library browser extension doesn’t collect any personal information unless you actively share it. It doesn’t collect your IP address or your device’s unique device IDs. Questions? Read more about Lean Library's Privacy Policy.

How Does It Work?  -- see also this link with a video!

You will be prompted to log in with your SHU UserID and password. It's safe to enter these (they are stored only in your browser).

Once installed, when you land on content licensed by SHU Library, the extension icon in your bookmarks bar will turn:

from greyto green

letting you know that, as a member of the SHU community, you have access to that content.

If the content you’d like to use doesn’t seem accessible, the extension will automatically check for legal open-access versions of the article, or provide a link to interlibrary loan.

If you end your browser session and return later, Lean Library will ask you to re-enter your SHU userID and password.
