Circulation and User Services Department: Reserves

Explains what services are available to students, staff, faculty, alums and visitors.

Course Reserves

Professors put items on Reserve so that all students will have equal access to assigned materials such as books or DVDs.  Digitized items may be linked to your Blackboard course.  Any "physical" items are located in the library behind the Circulation desk.  Students are able to check these out using their SHU ID card or a valid photo ID.  The length of time is determined by the professor, 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day.  Items not returned on time are charged a fine of $1.00 per HOUR.  Fines are higher for Reserve items in order to promote prompt return so that other students in the class have access to these items.

Reserve items are listed in the library catalog and may be searched by title, professors name or course name/number.  If you have any questions, please speak to someone at the Circulation desk.

Physical Course Reserves

From the library homepage (, look for the box titled "Popular Links" to find Course Reserves.  Click on that link.  You have the option of looking for your course reserve item by selecting either your course number or your professor's name.
