Hints for getting the most out of library services:
Here are some helpful hints and suggestions that may make library services more beneficial to you and your students. If there are any topics or questions not answered in the list below, please feel free to contact one of the librarians at the Reference Desk, ext. 7726.
Do not assume that all of your students have had library instruction. Clearly explain your assignments in writing so when the students bring it to the library, the librarian on duty will be able to help the students most effectively.
Please be sure to bring any materials you want placed on Reserve to the library well in advance of the time you assign it to your class.
When making assignments, please check the catalog, or ask a librarian, to verify that there are enough materials in our library to satisfy the needs of your class. If there are not enough resources, please provide your students enough time to obtain materials through interlibrary loan. It is particularly helpful if you can provide the Reference staff with a copy of your assignment in advance
The library does not purchase copies of assigned textbooks. If you want your students to have access to course texts without purchasing them, please put a personal copy on Reserve.
If you want to bring your class to the library for instruction, please call well in advance and have several dates selected. We can only accommodate one instructional session at a time.
If you wish to bring your class to the library for other than an instructional session, you may want to call in advance to verify that no other classes are using the Reference area during that time. Many faculty members meet their classes in the library to help the students while they are actually doing research. As with the campus generally, library space is at a premium.
When making assignments, please assist your lower level students in determining the kinds of sources they need to use. We have subscription databases that deliver content through the internet. These databases contain many popular as well as scholarly journal articles in full-text format that we do not have in hard copy. The Library also subscribes to e-book collections of monographs and reference sources.
The faculty circulation period for Sacred Heart library books is 70 days. If you need to keep a book longer, please be sure to renew it before it is overdue. You can do this by bringing it back to the Circulation desk or online, through the catalog.
Activate your SHU email. This is the official form of communication on campus.
