Who Can Use the Library?
Everyone has access to the library building and collections. However, borrowing materials is limited to currently enrolled Sacred Heart University students, faculty and staff, alumni with cards, Bridgeport and Fairfield residents with a card, certain High School students, and others who have purchased a guest borrower card. Non-Sacred Heart University people should contact the Circulation Desk at (203)371-7702 for more detailed information. Online subscription databases are restricted to use by the Sacred Heart University community.
How do I find a book?
The library has an online catalog. You can search for books by title, author, keyword or Library of Congress Subject Heading. Also, our holdings are listed in ReQuest, Connecticut’s online catalog and WorldCat, OCLC’s online catalog.
How Can I Renew my Library Materials?
In order to renew materials, you MUST do it on or before the due date. You can either renew them online through your account, or you can bring the item/s into the library and renew them in person at the Circulation Desk.

Is there a copier in the library?
There are two copiers in the library. One is located on the lower level just inside the double doors to the left. The other one is located on the main level across from the Circulation Desk.
Is there a Printer in the Library?
Yes, there is a printer located behind the Circulation Desk. The Reference area computers are linked to this printer. There is no remote access to it from laptops.
How Do I Access Electronic Resources from Off Campus?
Only currently enrolled Sacred Heart University students, faculty and staff have off-campus access to our subscription databases. You must access the database via the library web page. When you click on the title of the database, a box will pop up asking for a Username and Password. Your Username is just your last name and your Password is your 7-digit Sacred Heart University ID number. Once you have accessed one database, you will be able access others. However, if there is no activity for 20 mins. or longer, you will be logged out and you will have to repeat the sign on process.
What should I do if some item(s) on a page cannot display?
Some pages contain items that need Flash Player to play. Flash Player is an Adobe product that can be downloaded free. If you see the X sign on the page which looks like the item is not correctly linked, you need to download the player in order to view the page correctly. Click here to download Adobe Flash Player.
Where can I find the materials that my professor has placed on Reserve?
Physical items such as books, CD’s or DVDs are located behind the Circulation Desk in the library. You must ask for the items at the counter and check them out with your SHU ID card.
How long is the loan period?
For books:
- Undergraduates have 28 days with one renewal.
- Graduates have 70 days with one renewal.
- Faculty have 70 days with one renewal.
- Alumni have 28 days with no renewal.
- Guest Borrowers have 14 days with no renewal.
- High School student guests have 28 days with no renewal.
For videos: The loan period of 3 days with no renewal is the same for all patrons.
How do I view my Library record to find out what books I have checked out? To check your borrowing status, go to the library website > My Library Account to find out.
- $.25 per day for books.
- $1.00 per day for videos.
- $1.00 per HOUR per item for reserve materials.
- $1.00 per item, per day for books that have been recalled.
- $2.00 per item, per day for videos that have been recalled.
- $1.00 per day for special collection books.
How can I find out what books and/or periodicals are available at the Library?
All materials (books, journals, CDs, DVDs, etc.) are listed in our catalog.
What can I do if the Library does not have the book or article that I need?
Interlibrary loan is a service which makes it possible for library materials not owned by Ryan-Matura Library to be obtained from other libraries that participate in our InterLibrary Loan network. It is available to currently enrolled Sacred Heart University students, faculty and staff. This service is free of charge. However, fees are charged for late or lost items. Online application is available.
